New Constant Pressure Hose Clamp Addresses Thermal Movement in Fluid Systems

Mika (Tianjin) Pipeline Technology Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of industrial pipe clamps based in Tianjin, has introduced a heavy-duty constant pressure hose clamp designed to maintain seal integrity in systems subject to temperature fluctuations and vibration.

The clamp’s primary feature is an internal disc spring stack made of SS301 stainless steel. When installed and torqued, the spring stack compresses. As the hose expands, contracts, or takes a compression set over time, the spring exerts counter-pressure to keep the band tension within a consistent range. This compensating action reduces the common problem of loosening that occurs with standard worm-drive clamps, which rely on a fixed circumference.

Material Selection for Durability

The company has specified different stainless steel grades for specific components to balance corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. The band, housing, and end cover are formed from SS304, a material known for general corrosion resistance in industrial and vehicle environments. The screw, however, is manufactured from SS410, a martensitic grade with higher hardness than SS304. This choice is intended to reduce thread galling, particularly during high-torque installation or in maintenance settings where tools may be used repeatedly.

For the critical spring element, SS301 was selected due to its higher yield strength. In company-conducted compression tests at an 8 N·m torque setting, the spring stack returned to over 99% of its original deflection after compression, indicating that the compensation effect can be sustained through normal operational cycles.

Structural and Sealing Features

The housing is secured to the band with a four-rivet design. The company reports that destructive torque testing—the point at which the housing begins to twist—consistently exceeds 25 N·m, a value above the typical threshold for many standard clamps. This provides added rigidity in high-vibration applications such as engine compartments or pump rooms.

A liner is integrated inside the band. Its function is dual: it protects the hose surface from abrasion caused by the band edge, and it distributes the clamping load more evenly around the circumference. This helps to avoid localized pinching and contributes to a more uniform seal.

Target Applications

Industry segments that frequently use this clamp type include heavy-duty truck cooling and turbocharger lines, hydraulic oil return lines in construction equipment, pipe joints in water treatment infrastructure, and fuel or air lines on marine engines. It is also specified for general fluid transfer systems where pressure or temperature is not constant.

The company notes that users have reported extending maintenance intervals by using this clamp, as the spring compensation reduces the need for periodic re-tightening—a common maintenance task for fixed-circumference clamps. According to the manufacturer, this is a practical solution to the physical phenomena of thermal movement and material creep, rather than an untested new technology.
